How to pass your degree - 1. Referencing

My mini wrapped in clingfilm

Right. Firstly, don't spend most of your time trying to create a functioning website called clubsoton. In fact, just don't spend any. I study Mechanical Engineering at Southampton Uni and it appears I am only vaguely able to manage my time sensibly. However, can you blame me? For the last six weeks I should have been writing a formal report on the electromechanical systems of an innovative wind turbine design. That just isn't how I work. Therefore, with the deadline on Friday, I started my research late Thursday afternoon.

By four in the morning on Friday I had some thousand words and a caffeine overdose. I knew more about wind power than anyone should ever really want to. After a few hours sleep I slogged on completing the report by 3pm. Sweet...Referencing.

I would like at this point to patent a new referencing technique. So, your lecturer has set a minimum of 10 references. What do you do? Well there are two options here.

  1. Trawl through the library, wasting hours of valuable drinking time to discover the dusty conference reports and books that are ten years out of date. You read them all and you write an excellent report.
  2. My preferred method, ask kind Google to find the conference reports and books for you. Even search those books for useful phrases. Write a report mainly in your own words then randomly scatter reference numbers until it looks like you tried.[1]
Now, it remains to be seen which of these is the most effective in terms of passing my degree. However, I can safely say that option 2 leaves far more time for going out. Obviously, the best place to find out about what's on is right here!
